We all know how it is.
You’ve been meaning to donate to Adopt-A-Teen (adoptateenedmonton.ca) and The Christmas Bureau (Christmasbureau.ca).
But life gets in the way: Gramma needs help with her Christmas shopping, your pal needs emotional support, the kids actually want somebody to cook their supper …
But this too is life.
Six days before Christmas, The Christmas Bureau is 60.9% of the way to its goal, and still has 6,800 families to feed.
Adopt-A-Teen is at 68% of its goal to provide 6,000 under-privileged Edmonton teens a $50 Adopt-A-Teen/Walmart gift card – 1,900 teens to go.
Fifty dollars gives an under-privileged teen at least one gift this Christmas, $100 for his/her family provides a festive meal.
If you’ve been so meaning, please, make your donation! Time is running out!
Please spread the word. Social media is good. Word-of-mouth is better.
Donations can be made online by credit card at adoptateenedmonton.ca and Christmasbureau.ca.
Cheques can be mailed to Box 16000, Edmonton, AB T5J 4B4 , or dropped off during business hours to the Christmas Bureau office at 4230 118 Ave. above the Servus Credit Union.
Cash (and cheques) can be left at Christmas Bureau desks in the Bonnie Doon, Kingsway, Londonderry, Southgate and Edmonton Centre shopping malls.
Giving to your favourite Christmas charity is the perfect gift for somebody else.
For years, for Christmas, I’ve given Adopt-A-Teen donations in the name of my out-of-town relatives. They much prefer that kind of gift rather than a pair of gloves in the mail .
When our children were teens, part of their Christmas gift was a donation to Adopt-A-Teen.
If it’s the thought that counts, then thinking about families and teens needing help at Christmas is a noble thought indeed.
The Adopt-A-Teen special auction package “Oilers Past & Present” donated by Oiler VP Don Metz and former Sun photographer Tom Braid sits at $3,000.
To bid, call Tom at 780.965.1838. Bidding will end at noon on Saturday, December 22, 2018.
This one-of-a-kind package has several components – you could bid with friends and divvy up the goodies! It could be a unique multi-part gift/raffle for your staff or customers. It includes:
*An autographed Connor McDavid sweater in a jersey box. (You can wear the jersey to games. The jersey box opens and closes.)
*A signed and framed pix of Wayne Gretzky holding the Stanley Cup.
*Dinner for two at the Rogers Place Studio 99, with a Metz-guided tour of the memorabilia.
*Two gold seats for an Oiler game in February or March.
*An exclusive screening, with Don Metz providing commentary, of his Grant Fuhr documentary, Making Coco.
For a fully detailed package description, go to hicksbiz.com and scroll to the auction package.
Oiler legend Kevin Lowe has long been an ambassador for the Christmas Bureau.
Now Oilers’ group vice-chair, Kevin worked with the Oiler Ladies and the Oilers Community Foundation to raise $50,000 this year for the Christmas Bureau. Kevin raised another $7,000 at the Christmas Bureau Breakfast on Tuesday, offering dinner and suite seats for an Oilers/Original Six team game.
The biggest donation at the Christmas Bureau breakfast came from Sobeys/Safeway, who offer a charitable discount on the grocery gift cards purchased by the Christmas Bureau The value of that discount? $179,870!
Still, most funds raised for Adopt-A-Teen and Christmas Bureau come from those of us with modest budgets … or from groups - like the $3,025 for Adopt-A-Teen raised by Sherwood Park’s Acuren Group at its holiday staff party.
Please give – 6,800 families and 1,900 teens to go!!! If you have questions, call me at 780.707.6379. Graham Hicks
